08/12/2005: "Monsanto files patent on "Pigs""

The patent applications were published in February 2005 at the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) in Geneva....There are more than 160 countries and territories mentioned where the patent is sought including Europe, the Russian Federation, Asia (India, China, Philippines) America (USA, Brazil, Mexico), Australia and New Zealand. WIPO itself can only receive applications, not grant patents. The applications are forwarded to regional patent offices.

This is extremely important. Health conscience people have been vocal, rejecting Monsanto's attack on natural DNA in the environment. Australia, a country that has forbidden any GM foods, now finds over 1% of it's imports are contaminated with GM foods. Small farmers with fields of non-GM crops are in danger when farming near GM crops. The GM seed becomes airborne and is integrated into the non-GM crop without the farmer's knowledge. In some cases, Monsanto has demanded payment for the use of it's unwanted crop, sometimes taking the farmer to court.

I feel the most dangerous line being crossed is the ownership of reproduction. No company or government has the right to own nature's most creative expression of freedom. No matter what the animal or plant is - ownership of life is oppression. True spokespersons for "freedom" take note.

The evolution of warfare has used technology to save human lives. I believe this is more of a political motivation than a humanitarian one. Voters do not like to see the true cost of war (death) so we are being removed from the process. The DNA patent power of Monsanto (who gave us agent orange in Vietnam) combined with the current climate of war and fear will soon birth a synthetic soldier. A soldier lacking the rights to reproduce and lacking the freedoms of the constitution. This could be the utopia for the CIA, pentagon and the neocons... or it could be my imagination.

Let's hope it's the latter...
