03/02/2006: "2005 picks"
Some good things that did come out of 2005!
Live Music:
Lyrics Born at the Wow Hall - he and his full funk band tore the hall down!
John Scolfield in Portland - majority of the concert were Ray Charles covers with a jazz/funk twist
March Forth at Oregon Country Fair - great music, high energy with dancers performing
Gillian Welch at McDonald theater - I was glowing for a week afterward
Mood Area 52 / Scrambled Ape - Local Eugene tango band / jazz band
CD's (came out before 2006, but I just found because I'm slow like that):
Cake - Pressure Chief
Wilco - A Ghost is Born
Putamayo World Reggae
Jack Johnson - In Between Dreams
Movies:
Star Wars III - I liked it for what it was. Seemed to emphasize that good and evil aren't manipulating our lives rather than a cosmic energy that results from our daily choices. Plus, Yoda kicked some serious ass!
Batman Returns - Finally a good representation of the dark knight. The first two movies can now rest in peace.
TV:
The Simpsons can do no wrong!
Politics:
Katrina brings to the National radar the true motives of our capitalist government. Thousands of poor people are left to starve after a devastating hurricane, while our military can move troops, food, bombs and propaganda to the other side of the earth to protect oil reserves from "terrorists" who might drop the American dollar for the Euro.
Monsanto files a patent on a pig. And no one seems to care?
U.S. federal prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald, Claims the Chicago Grand Jury will indict Bush and others for perjury. Ongoing...
Books (again, I'm slow):
Joe Sacco - Safe Area Gorazde, Palestine: In The Gaza Strip - infotainment at it's best
Chris Ware - Billy Corrigan, the Smartest Boy on Earth
Jason Shiga - Bookhunter (Jason gets national attention from Time magazine for his choose your own adventure comics)
Last but not least - by far - my friends and family who showed me how important I am to them. For that, I am forever inspired, proud and thankful!!
Look forward to more good things in 2006...
