06/27/2006: "Automobiles, homes and debt"
We could all use some advice, right? Me, I'm currently carless and debating on what to put my time into researching: buying a car or buying a house? If I buy a house, I'm dedicated to learning some home repair over the next 5 years, but I will get a return on my investment. On the other hand, this weekend I looked at some diesel trucks at a bio-car-dealership new in town. A reliable diesel truck converted to run on vegetable oil could run me up to 9 grand.
The pros:
I could put in a huge grease-tank in the bed of the truck that would give me a 700 mile radius of road trip before refueling.
I support a renewable energy source and the domestic economy.
My truck makes people hungry.
The cons:
I have two cats. I don't feel comfortable leaving them with anyone for more than a month, so what's the point of traveling at all.
9 grand is a lot of debt on a product that is going to lose all it's value before I can pay it off.
Perhaps I should consider looking at diesel motor homes and kill two birds with one debt. Maybe I should stop saving my money altogether and live for today. Sheez... Money stuff sucks.
